Our Alumicastings are created by pouring molten aluminum into 55 gallon drums of hydrated water polymer beads. The castings have many shapes, sizes and uses: from table centerpieces to plant or ornament holders to display stands, etc. Since no two castings are alike, the exact design cannot be replicated. We began making these sculptures following our multi-year venture with anthill castings (see the Deadant section). We were enamored by the fact there were NO DAMN ANTS to deal with!
Fun facts:
1. Aluminum melts at just over 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit and boils at just over 4,400 degrees. We estimate we pour at about 1,800 degrees.
2. Our burner system consists of three 500,000 Btu propane torches.
3. We melt the aluminum in 8 quart reinforced cast iron pots. A full pour is usually about 6 1/2 quarts.
4. We purchase bulk aluminum in ingot form. Melting aluminum cans and other scrap material is not economical.
5. Polymer beads are used in the floral industry, but are also contained in baby diapers and sweat bands. They are also used to clean up industrial spills. The beads we use come in granular form and are about the size of BBs. When immersed in water overnight they will swell to 1/2" to 1 1/8" in diameter depending on the granule used. Over time they will dry out & return to reusable granular form.
