Charlie and Rick with KILLER, circa 2008!
Sometime in late 2008, on a chilly deer lease near Walnut Springs, TX, Charlie and his very good friend Rick Baldwin were sitting around a roaring campfire drinking Bacardi Rum and Coke, listening to loud rock-and-roll music, telling tall tales, and basically living the good life. As the evening wore on..... and the rum flowed freely..... they decided that something was missing. What could it be? They decided their campsite needed a mascot..... and within a few weeks "Killer" was born. Soon thereafter it was determined that Killer needed companionship, hence the first dog and a giant scorpion were born.....and the ball was rolling! Over the next couple of decades Charlie and Rick created hundreds of unique pieces of Scrapwelder art, turning nothing into something, and on top of that the pieces had some pretty creative names. The pieces ranged in size from a bug made from a golf shoe cleat-changing-tool to a monstrous Saguaro Cactus that measured almost 15 ft. tall and was composed of over 1,100 horseshoes. The original Killer is still mounted atop the firepit at Rick's deer lease outside Bowie, TX. Although the friends no longer create Scrapwelder pieces together, Charlie still occasionally cranks out something weird.....go figure!!
